Kerala Community Centre
Kerala Community Centre
In close collaboration with the Canadian Kerala Cultural Association, Planworks Architectural and Interior Design teams achieved in creating a well planned, multi-use facility for cultural meetings and celebrations, sporting events, and local community use.
Exuding both a contemporary aesthetic suitable to Edmonton’s northern location and traditional features and underlying elements that emulate the southern state of Kerala in India, this proposed southside venue will provide a positive exposure for our client within the Edmonton community at large. It will also be a distinctly unique facility within a North American context. Various design options were investigated to ensure CKCA Board member approval.
Early site analysis examined the feasibility of a second, separate commercial CRU building on site. A central multipurpose space will cater to large formal event seating arrangements, informal gatherings and contain indoor volleyball and badminton courts for various tournaments as well as local community use. A grand mezzanine will overlook the main hall and further house administrative office space. A main level raised stage aligning with the central hall and ancillary support spaces complete the client’s program.
Site development includes an elegant, complementary designed signature porte-cochere(arrival feature), bus coach drop-off zone and requisite barrier-free guest parking. The building is planned to incorporate geothermal systems to satisfy its’ energy needs, part of the client’s vision to achieve a near net zero facility. A rooftop solar panel array was contemplated as a future consideration, influencing the building’s final roofline. A maximum zoning building height due to YEG flight paths was a constraint that required balancing against the internal sport courts spatial clearance requirements.
